Welcome! I'm Michael Lewis, the artist behind Shadow Goat. I work primarily in watercolor and ink, with some oil pastel and graphite to keep things interesting. I didn't take a straightforward or traditional path to art; mine jumped around . . . a bit like a goat, you could say. As a child, I loved comic books and comic book art. While I had dreams of going to art school, life led to a brief stint in the army, where I was based in South Korea. After that, I became a land surveyor and attended art classes at my local community college. Many years passed in which art was on the back burner. I'm happy to now be able to give art a lasting place in my life, and I invite you to enjoy my artwork.
I take inspiration from many places: animals, trees, the beautiful landscape of Western Massachusetts, and my crazy imagination. My compositions are creations of mood and movement. I'm grateful to the teachers in my life, both in the form of traditional teachers and the many artists I've been inspired by: Alexander "Sasha" Spivak, Lily Joy Friedling, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, John Muth, Andrew Wyeth, Bernie Wrightson, John Singer Sargent, William Turner, Moebius, Mike Kaluta, and Roger Dean.
